So why did an old Chevy Cavalier from 20 years ago get a spare tire, but your fancy new Acura RLX doesn't have one? As fuel economy standards increased, automakers decided to shed excess weight. Removing the spare tire, jack and lug wrench saves 40 to 50 pounds.
While 50 pounds doesn't sound like much in a 3,800-pound car, every bit adds up; it also lets them save on assembly costs and the cost of the spare tire and tools.Swapping on a spare should be easy, but, unfortunately, around 30 percent of new cars don't come with spare tires anymore. Here's what you can do before your summer road trip to make blown tires a non-issue. No spare tire? No problem. You're out on your summer road trip, driving 150 miles from nowhere. I know they're not an enthusiast favorite, but hear me out. Run-flat tires are designed to take a puncture to the tread, lose air pressure and allow you to keep driving.

Why worn or budget tires on classic cars are a dangerous false economy. Proper rubber can save your car, wallet, and even life.
Have had tires go hard, and come apart- tread separation is a real issue and you might think you save money on those 20 year old tires the reality is that one accident or body damage is a heck of a lot more to fix than the cost of new rubber- my rule- replace them every 5 years regardless- also this means you have much stickier tires to “play” with-I was worried about the tires on my low mileage 50 year old car. I purchased a new set & saved the original set. The original set still had plenty of tread and no sidewall cracking. I heard that there could be degradation on the inside and found that the inside looked brand new.Your eyes move down to its refurbished wheels, equally gleaming, and suddenly you see through the illusion. What has ruined, in an instant, the veneer of care are the rock-hard, budget, or ancient (sometimes all three) tires wrapped around those recently restored rims. The temptation to fit, or simply leave, sub-standard rubber in place might initially appear forgivable—especially if your annual use consists of merely trundling over to the next town once or twice a year for a leisurely drive on the odd sunny Sunday afternoon. However, if you stop for even a millisecond to think about it, leaving lousy tires on any car, no matter its use, makes no sense at all.

I've tried acouple diffrent things to try and help tire...lile TC on early breaking lighter on the throttle..but i got to be over looking something?
I've been told tire saving is one of my best strengths and I've used that to win a recent FIA race or two. It comes down to a few things: - Brake bias: Depending on the car, you can adjust this forward to save the rears and vice versa. - Trail braking: Allows for more rotation through corners. The by far most efficient way to preserve tires wasn't mentioned. It's "don't drive at all". ... Tyres will get worn what ever you do. But your are right, its possible to save some tyres. My suggestion to you is to be as fast as possible, focus on driving fast.Click to expand... Earlier braking and having good corner exits, actually makes you go faster, not slower. And on paper its better for tire management aswell, rather than doing crazy late brakings ... Tyres will get worn what ever you do. But your are right, its possible to save some tyres. The only time I tire save is obviously on the endurances where its an issue. Then I go all out as I did something wrong like stay on the tyres too long and the race is ending and I cant be bothered pitting. I usually have enough power and fuel but its a case of lowering fuel map a notch, maybe even switching to bumper cam and then brake early, accelerate out smoothly and stay off the curbs.
Tyre saving can be a big topic in Formula 1, but what is it, why do drivers do it and how do they save their tyres? Find out everything here.
The fundamental factor behind the need to save tyres is race strategy. During a race weekend, teams will analyse performance data to determine the ultimate pitstop strategy for the race.Different series have different approaches to tyres – and that affects how much tyre wear there is and how important it is to save tyres.
Low-rolling-resistance tires can improve fuel economy. Consumer Reports' tests show how tires can affect fuel economy, and we rank the latest performance all-season tires by rolling resistance.
Shoppers must consider many factors when buying tires: braking performance, wet-weather grip, how long they last, and price. But taking into account a tire’s rolling resistance could save you money at the pump.Exactly how much depends on your car and other factors, but CR tests show that it’s possible to save a couple hundred dollars over the service life of a set of tires by choosing a model with low rolling resistance. There have been significant strides in tire technology designed to improve fuel economy, driven in part by automakers trying to meet increasingly stringent fuel-economy standards. Consumers also are eager to save at the pump, especially now.Over 12,000 miles driven, that 34 percent difference in resistance equals about 14 gallons of gas separating the best performer from the worst, based on average fuel economy. It adds up to about $70 per year, or about $360 over the life of a set of tires (62,000 miles for a performance all-season tire, based on CR testing).
I've been practicing for over 2 hours but i still don't know how to save my tires while keeping up the pace. (Sorry for the typo)
Back up the corners. Don’t carry a bunch of sliding speed into the corners, back them up and save some tire for the race, you’ll seem slow at first but you’ll end up being way faster in later part of the stint. Also run a lower brake bias will save the front tires. To help, turn up the tire noise in sound settings. You can use the tire but don’t overuse it if that makes sense. Slow down a little sooner than you would in qualifying! Hope that helps. Happy racing.
If you don’t handle and store your tires properly, their characteristics can change. This can shorten their life. They can even deteriorate so badly in storage that they need to be replaced. But if you handle and store them correctly, they will deliver years of service – and you will save money.
Protect your tires during off-season with our storage tips ✓ Learn how to store tires correctly. ► Read now!You may have them changed by a professional or do it yourself in your garage at home. But what do you do after they have been taken off? Knowing how to store tires after removing them from your vehicle is essential – whether you’ve got a car or motorcycle. Before your tires get removed or you remove them yourself, mark their position on your car – for example by labeling them with FR (front right) or BL (back left). This is important so you can rotate the tires properly the next time you mount them, ensuring even wear. This next step requires inaction, rather than action. Tires don’t need any kind of dressing or gloss product applied prior to storage. Tire compounds are formulated to resist ozone cracking and other environmental stressors.
